My Motivation
This is a Halibut Serving Bowl carved out of yellow cedar which is used to serve food to guests at Potlatches. Halibut are a major food source for my Kwakwaka'wakw people. This symbol represents factors that have driven me to engage with the MSW-Leadership program. I wanted to bring the voices of foster alumni adults into child welfare research, policy and practice.
I began this journey as someone who was naive and hopeful. I believed that lack of awareness around the plight of foster alumni adults, who are mainly indigenous, and the essential role that we can play in the renewal and re-development of child welfare services could be remedied solely through greater dissemination of this information. I had not considered the possibility that oppression and social stratification were contributing to maintenance of the status quo.
